United 93

(2006—Paul Greengrass —France/UK/USA) (1 hr 51. Rated R for language, and some intense sequences of terror and violence. A rating appeal is planned.)

Al has not seen this movie yet and, most likely, never will. He is, furthermore, of the opinion that this movie should *only* be seen as part of a double feature, along with the film “Why We Fight.”

Caryl, however, *has* seen “United 93,” and calls it a Must-See movie for any American l6 years of age and over. She thinks Al is being way toooo harsh and judgmental in his dismissal of something he has not, in fact, even seen.

Caryl would bet that at least three-fourths of the population doesn’t even realize that four planes were involved in 9/11. As she says, this movie drives home the point that we were attacked! It shows how totally unprepared we Americans were, and also shows that the terrorists *knew* how unprepared we were. The inadequate responses of our military machine and the FAA may well be the most chilling parts of this film.

Caryl saw the movie as intelligent, sensitive and, presumably, fairly accurate. It details events immediately before and during the horrible morning of 9/11. Excepting for one short scene of the passengers boarding the plane, the movie is shot entirely in the airport control room and aboard the doomed plane.

Caryl is sure each person in the audience will be moved in a different way but she is sure that Everyone will be moved. The last 20 minutes — during which the passengers overpower the terrorists to divert them from their mission of hitting The White House — are riveting. Caryl says that the movie is non-political, that the direction, art direction, and casting are superior, and that every American over 16 must see this movie!
