Al and his Best Buddy both totally loved this film when they saw it at the Detroit Film Theatre. Whenever you can rent it, do so! This version of “The Merchant of Venice” is remarkable for many things. Chief among them is the overwhelming performance of Al Pacino as Shylock. We all know all the speeches and plot points from our high school English literature classes. The dialogue is difficult for the modern ear to follow — as is all of Shakespeare — yet any single line of dialogue in the entire script has rewards for the attentive ear. The makeup, costuming, set design and cinematography (by Benoit Delhomme) all reward the eye, even if the ear should receive nothing. Jeremy Irons, as Antonio, and Joseph Fiennes, as Bassanio, give wonderful performances. It is Lynn Collins portrayal of Portia, however, that is the most luminescent. Collins warms our soul every time she appears on camera. If you were ever a high school student in America, you know the story of “The Merchant of Venice.” You will never, however, have come upon such a stunning portrayal of the Jew Shylock as you will see by Al Pacino in this film. Pacino makes Shylock a character to both, at one turn, be hated and supported. Do not miss it!
