We Take a Bit of Holiday

We’ll be out of touch July the 29th through August the 1st or 2nd. Taking a bit of a break to cruise Torch Lake, Michigan, hit some golf balls into the pristine northern Michigan golf-course forest, and maybe take in a bit of the Traverse City Film Festival, as our busy schedule permits.

Meanwhile? Do not miss seeing “Okuribito” [“Departures”] and “The Hurt Locker” this weekend. Both these films carry a Rating of “2” from The Film Snob. (See our side-bar page “How Caryl & Al and The Film Snob Rate Movies.”) Each, in their own way, will transport you into a world of awe and wonder.

“500 Days of Summer” is also a glorious bet for entertainment that’s more light-hearted.

In addition, if you’re within 50 miles of the Detroit Film Theatre you can see the double feature of “Jerichow” and “Soul Power” which are playing there. We’ve seen “Jerichow” and will see “Soul Power” upon our return. (Don’t forget, either, if you live in The Great Lakes Basin, that a brilliant new season Fall/Winter of films starts at the Detroit Film Theatre on September the 11th.)

Finally, if a water-skiing accident has you laid up this weekend, rent “Stop Making Sense,” Jonathan Demme’s film of The Talking Heads. It’s the best concert film ever made stark and stimulating in its simplicity.

Have fun, and we’ll see you in the movies!

(Happy Birthday, Elizabeth!)
